The Real Folk Blues stands as one of the definitive documents of Chicago blues. Compiled shortly after the death of Sonny Boy Williamson II, born Aleck Miller, and not to be confused with the earlier John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, this album draws from his prolific run on Chess and its subsidiary Checker Records, where he became one of the most commanding harmonica players and vocalists in the genre's history.
Before fronting his own sessions, Williamson contributed iconic harmonica work alongside Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, and other Chess heavyweights. The Real Folk Blues showcases him as a full bandleader: raw, sly, and in complete command. Highlights include "Bring It On Home," the song that would later anchor a Led Zeppelin performance; "One Way Out," later made famous by the Allman Brothers Band; and "That's All I Want," a slow-burning showcase for his unmistakable tone and phrasing. Liner notes are by Chess songwriter and bassist Willie Dixon, whose own fingerprints are across much of the Chess catalog.
