Guitarist Jeff Parker leads the ETA IVtet — a boundary-dissolving jazz ensemble featuring saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, and drummer Jay Bellerose. The group emerged from a weekly residency Parker launched in 2016 at ETA, a beloved Northeast Los Angeles venue, and spent seven years evolving from a standards-rooted band into one of contemporary jazz's most adventurous improvisational units.
Their music resists easy categorization — equal parts groove-oriented, painterly, polyrhythmic, minimalist, and mantric — with performances that frequently stretch beyond 45 minutes of unbroken, transcendent exploration. Happy Today captures this ETA IVtet at their most refined: long-form improvisations that feel simultaneously spontaneous and inevitable, charting territories few ensembles dare to enter.
Happy Today is historic because it is the IVtet's first-ever recording outside of their original room at Highland Park's ETA. It was captured live down the street at the Lodge Room in front of 400 enraptured "deep listeners." Encapsulating this record functions as a permanent tribute to a pivotal era-defining moment in modern Los Angeles jazz history.
