It was the final Rush record to be co- produced by Peter Collins, and the last Rush record before a five-year hiatus for the band, which ended in 2001. On release, it debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, with the title track climbing to No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Initially, Test for Echo was only released on CD and cassette, but vinyl was included for the 2015 and 2025 reissues.
