Quicksand's Manic Compression is one of the defining records of 1990s post-hardcore. Released in 1995, it peaked at No. 135 on the Billboard 200 and went on to leave its mark on bands like Deftones, Cave In, Thrice, and countless others. Thursday's Geoff Rickly described it as Quicksand's In Utero, the harder, darker follow-up that proved the band weren't just a moment, but a movement.
Produced by Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, Helmet) and Don Fury (Sick of It All, Agnostic Front), the record is rooted in New York Hardcore (featuring Walter Schreifels of Gorilla Biscuits/Youth of Today, Alan Cage of Burn, Tom Capone of Beyond, and Sergio Vega of Absolution) while reaching far beyond it. Tracks like "Thorn in My Side," "Delusional," and "Landmine Spring" fuse groove-heavy riffs, metallic weight, and alt-rock melody into something that still sounds urgent over thirty years later.
