Louder Than You Think is the official soundtrack to the SXSW Award-winning documentary of the same name, a film chronicling the extraordinary, chaotic life of Gary Young, the original drummer of Pavement and one of the unsung architects of lo-fi indie rock. This limited colored vinyl LP is as wonderfully unclassifiable as the man it documents.
The record moves through multiple chapters of Young's musical world: early hardcore punk and post-punk recordings, and the gloriously strange output of his band Hospital, whose track "Plantman" somehow became an unlikely MTV favorite. Original score music composed by Noah Georgeson and Edward W. Dahl sits alongside ultra-rare Pavement live tracks, material that Pavement collectors alone should take note of.
The emotional centerpiece is something genuinely rare: a song written by Gary Young himself, handed to his old friend Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg, who transformed it into a suitably trippy, feedback-soaked track, with Stephen Malkmus adding guitar yowls, recorded for the film shortly before Gary's passing in August 2023. It is, in the truest sense, a final collaboration.
Proudly resistant to genres and conventions, the Louder Than You Think soundtrack is as complex, fun, puzzling and ultimately lovable as the alcohol-fuelled hippie who helped define the sound of all things lo-fi, indie rock and slacker in between headstands.
